I tried to lift my left arm and couldn\u2019t. I knew I was having a stroke,\u201d he recalls of the moment that proved particularly frightening because he had seen it before, when his mother suffered a stroke in 1964.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy\u2019s mother, Netinell Mickler was of the Mickler family, who helped settle St. Johns County in the 1820s. Sidney Mickler led construction of a 600-foot-long fishing pier out of live oak and palm logs with nary a power tool in sight at what is now Mickler\u2019s Landing Beach in St. Johns County back in 1930-something. Altee\u2019s defiant bounce-back from a massive stroke that left him in an extended coma in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"491\" src=\"https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-Brooks-Rehab-walking.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1049\" style=\"width:443px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-Brooks-Rehab-walking.jpg 400w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-Brooks-Rehab-walking-244x300.jpg 244w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-Brooks-Rehab-walking-150x184.jpg 150w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-Brooks-Rehab-walking-300x368.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Word of Altee\u2019s stroke spread with dizzying speed. Inundated with phone calls, Altee\u2019s sister Cam Altee Brown created a Facebook page to provide updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithin 24 hours, there were 1,000 people on that page,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next six weeks, as Altee remained in a coma, the Beaches community rallied. An airplane banner reading \u201cGET WELL SOON ANDY BIG GUY ALTEE\u201d flew over the ocean. Beaches Diner\u2019s marquee let Altee and his family know they were praying. And, in a nod to Altee\u2019s 10-gallon-donor status, a \u201cGive Like Andy \u2018\u2019 blood drive racked up 55 units \u2013 enough to help save 165 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-beach-diner-sign.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1051\" style=\"width:217px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-beach-diner-sign.jpg 600w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-beach-diner-sign-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-beach-diner-sign-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-beach-diner-sign-500x500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Jared Kizer, who befriended Altee when the two were sixth graders at Fletcher Junior High in Jacksonville Beach said he was shocked when heard about his stroke because Altee was the healthiest person he knew. \u201cNow, looking back, I should have known something was wrong because he complained about a headache and kept squinting his eyes like he couldn\u2019t see, \u201c said Kizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought, \u2018I\u2019m back!\u2019\u201d Altee recalls, though he knew life would be different. \u201cThe day before my stroke I was going to the gym every day, bench pressing 500 pounds. They called me \u2018Big Guy\u2019 because I was 6\u20192, 240 pounds, living a cartoon of a life. I realized I was not going to be the same person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-with-friends2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1058\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-with-friends2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-with-friends2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-with-friends2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-with-friends2-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-with-friends2-696x392.jpg 696w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-with-friends2-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe doctors gave me a 13-percent chance of survival,\u201d says Altee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Altee spent most of the next five years in bed, cared for by his stepmother who lives nearby. But he continued therapy, stayed in touch with friends and, a few years ago, scored an electric bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow, I\u2019m all over the place,\u201d he says. \u201cI kicked that diagnosis. I ride 10 miles three days a week on my bike with my left side paralyzed. My right side does all the work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though recovery has been a long road and is still ongoing, those who know Altee are unsurprised at his indomitable spirit. Brown noted that her brother swam the Volunteer Life Saving Corps\u2019 annual ocean marathon when he was in high school. \u201cHe came in dead last, but he did it. After he had his stroke, he swore he was going to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-the-beach-again-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1050\" style=\"width:398px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-the-beach-again-2.jpg 450w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-the-beach-again-2-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-the-beach-again-2-150x267.jpg 150w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-the-beach-again-2-300x533.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phlexon-dev.com\/senior\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/andy-at-the-beach-again-2-281x500.jpg 281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Corps is very important to Andy and the marathon is an important aspect of the tradition,\u201d adds longtime friend and fellow lifeguard-turned-emergency medicine physician Andrew Schmidt, who just happened to be one on the medical team that treated Altee. So, two participating lifeguards tied themselves to a rowboat and, with Schmidt following for safety, towed Altee the entire three miles of the marathon. \u201cI don\u2019t think he stopped smiling once during the two hours it took. I picked him up and carried him across the finish line and the emotion on his face was something pretty special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is not going to sit on a pity pot,\u201d Kizer says. \u201cHe is not going to give up or let his condition hinder him. He\u2019s going to keep going, keep voicing his opinion, keep getting up and riding his bike. He hasn\u2019t changed a bit.
